How to Protect Your Strands from the Sun's Rays

The sun is shining, and it's time for a friendly reminder: it’s not just your skin that can get damaged by the sun's rays. As you're stocking up on SPF to protect your skin, don't forget that your hair needs some love too! The UV rays can be just as harmful to your hair as they are to your skin, leading to dryness, breakage, and color fading.

When it comes to summer hair care, a two-part strategy is essential: protection and soothing. Today, I’m excited to share my go-to hair products and accessories that will help you achieve both!

Protection for Your Hair

Just like your skin, your hair needs a barrier against the harsh rays of the sun. Here are some of my top recommendations to keep your locks safe during these sunnier months:

  1. Sun Protection Spray: A good UV protection spray is a must-have. It forms a shield around your hair, preventing damage from the sun. My go-to is the Innersense Hair Love Prep Spray, which provides care from thermal, UV, and environmental exposure.

  2. Leave-In Conditioner: Incorporate a light leave-in conditioner into your routine. It not only adds soothing moisture to your hair but also provides an extra layer of protection.  Especially before jumping into chlorinated water!

  3. Wide-Brimmed Hats and Scarves: Sometimes the simplest solutions are the best. Wearing a hat or wrapping your hair in a scarf provides a physical barrier against the sun, giving your hair a break from direct exposure.  Plus, what an amazing excuse to wear some fun accessories!

Soothing Your Hair

After a day in the sun, your hair and scalp might need some focused TLC. Here are a couple of my go-to ways to soothe your strands:

  1. Deep Conditioning Masks: A weekly or bi-weekly deep conditioning mask can work wonders for sun-exposed hair. I swear by Innersense’s Hydrating Hair Mask, which has certified organic ingredients such as shea butter, tamanu oil and jojoba oil to help fight frizz, smooth split ends, replenish hydration and protect against moisture loss, breakage and environmental stressors.  Plus it includes hydrolyzed quinoa which is a great superfood protein for your hair helping it to retain moisture.

  2. Oils: Oils are a great way to replenish shine.  It’s also great for trapping water from entering and leaving your hair. So be careful about what kind you're using and when you’re applying it, otherwise you risk blocking the magic ingredient of water from getting inside. One of my go to silicone free oils is I Create ShineI like to apply this to the ends of my hair to keep my curls shiny and have less frizz.

Enjoy The Sunshine

Remember, the hair magic we create in the salon deserves to be protected, friend! With good products, you can enjoy the sunshine without compromising the health and beauty of your hair. Include these protective and soothing steps into your summer routine and I PROMISE your hair will thank you.

Stay radiant and enjoy the sun safely, both your skin and your hair strands!
